Elena Norkina

                After seventeen years as a freelance flutist, a teacher and accompanist in

                native Ukraine, Ms. Elena Norkina has come to Canada to continue her

                career.

 

Background

 

                Ms. Norkina started playing the piano at the age of seven at the Central

                Music School in Novorossiysk, Russia, taking the following mandatory

                subjects:

 

  •                 solfeggio

  •                 history of music (foreign, Russian, Soviet)

  •                 piano accompaniment

  •                 piano duet

  •                 chorus class

  •                 theory rudiments

 

                At the age of 16 Ms. Norkina entered the theory of music faculty at the

                Music College of Vinnitsa , Ukraine. There she studied the following

                subjects:

  •                 piano performance

  •                 harmony

  •                 theoretical pedagogy

  •                 practical pedagogy

  •                 chorus conducting

  •                 folk music of the Nations of the USSR

  •                 analysis

  •                 music history

 

                 Later Ms. Norkina became interested in playing the flute and entered the

                wind instruments faculty, where she studied flute performance, ensemble

                class and symphony orchestra class.

 

                In 1979 after graduating from the College with distinction, Ms. Norkina

                won the Principal Flute position with the orchestra at Vinnitsa Sadovsky

                Music and Drama Theater. At the same time she started working as a flute

                teacher at the Music School #1 also located in Vinnitsa. Later she was

                taking private lessons from Professor Andrey Protsenko Ukraine’s "Number

                One" concert flutist and Teacher at the Kiev State Conservatory of Music.

                 After five years of study in 1986, Ms. Norkina graduated from Lvov

                Lysenko State Conservatory. There she studied with Professors Yuri

                Smirnov (flute) and Vladimir Semenichenko (chamber ensemble). She

                studied subjects like:

 

  •                 piano

  •                 history of the flute

  •                 notable performers past and present

  •                 pedagogical principles

  •                 English

  •                 Music History

 

                 At the same time Ms. Norkina was studying via correspondence at the Kiev

                Courses of Foreign Languages(English) to be an English Teacher. She

                graduated from her English course in 1986 with distinction.

                 In August 1997 after arriving in Canada Ms. Norkina attended a "Teaching

                Piano" seminar to familiarize herself with Canadian methods of instruction

                by Clinician Barbara Mackin, in Calgary, Alberta.

 Teaching

 

  •  1979 - 1996 Flute Teacher at Music School #1 , Vinnitsa, Ukraine

  •  1986 - 1996 The Head of the Wind Instruments Faculty of School # 1.

 

                Annual Master Class Performances with the best students for the teachers of

                Vinnitsky region. Ms. Norkina worked with young students (7- 17)

                preparing them for their Conservatory and Teacher training examinations.

                Many of her students were the winners of regional competitions.

 

  • 1986-1995 Teaching English as a second language in Ukraine.

 

  • 1997-2008 After moving to Canada Ms. Norkina keeps teaching flute , piano, voice and theory .

 

 

Performances

 

  • 1979 - 1986 Principal flutist at the Vinnista Music and Drama Theater in Ukraine.

  • Tours to Russia, Moldavia, Latvia, Belorussia, Daghestan, Kabardino-

  •  Balkaria, the Crimea and other republics and regions of the former Soviet  Union.

  •  1986 - 1996 Accompanist at the Vinnista Music School # 1.

  •  1994 - 1996 Principal Flutist with the Russian Folk Instruments Orchestra.

  •  1994 - 1996 Solo and chamber music performer(flute) at the Vinnitsa Art Gallery,

  • Vinnitsa, Ukraine.

  •  2001-2003 Accompanist at the Unity Church of Canada, Calgary,Alberta

1996 – 2008 Freelancing as an Accompanist and Flutist with the following performers in Calgary.
